My Pledge for Change: In the Spirit of Harmony with Our Planet
I pledge to support the poor in producers in Africa by providing trade opportunities at a fair price, in an way that I can.
About Me:
Chinwe Russell first made soap at the age of six, helped by her Grandmother in Eastern Nigeria, Chinwe’s birthplace. Over thirty years later Chinwe gave up her job as a Recruitment Consultant to become a Sussex natural skin care entrepreneur. Her business, starting as a hobby in 2005, now produces a wide range of Fairtrade natural moisturisers, anti-wrinkle body butters, lotions, and liquid black soap, all containing the magic ingredient, shea butter. ‘Black Soap’, whose base uses ancient African methods, passed down from her Mum, who made skin care in 1960s Nigeria, is one of the most successful products on her website, www.sheabynature.co.uk. Coloured dark brown to black, they are free from artificial ingredients, untested on animals, and certified Vegan.

Shea Butter, also known as Women’s Gold, comes from the Karite tree of the Savannah regions of Africa. Known for its restorative properties, it leaves skin supple, and has been traditionally used in Africa to help conditions such as extreme dryness, eczema, cuts, burns, blemishes, wrinkles, skin rashes, rough skin and much more. With natural sunscreen properties, it suits all skin types, and the whole family.

Chinwe became seriously interested in traditional skin care while taking an Agricultural Degree specialising in Crop Science. However, a move to France put her business ideas on the back burner, while she took another Degree in French Language Literature, and a Masters in Business Administration.

She pays over the odds for the raw product - processed largely by women in Ghana and Nigeria, in co-operatives she helped to set up and support.

“I believe strongly in providing Fair-trade opportunities for these communities,” said Chinwe. “Many of the women are widows with many children to support, and without this income many families would have problems surviving.”

Back in Sussex the Shea Butter is blended with other natural oils and scented with essential oils, and enriched with herbs. As well as selling online, she supplies a few select independent shops and has stalls at Farmer’s and Fair-trade Markets in Hastings, Brighton and Lewes

“My mission is to convert many people to shea butter skin care, as a way to improve their skin as well as to ensure the future of communities that I support.”

From a magical childhood experience grew the successful business Chinwe runs today, offering a balm for people who care about poverty, their body, and what they use on it.

First there was Earth and then there was Man. And Man reaped everything he could from our Earth but failed to "give back". And then there came a time of reckoning. And Man began to "give back"... Everything started to Change..... The World is changing. People are changing. And business has changed... Every business you find in our ethical directory is a giving business....giving back to Our Planet by working in the Spirit of Harmony with Earth. ...Every member on Pledging for Change is here because they believe in Giving Back in the Spirit of Harmony with Our Planet

Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can. -- John Wesley, "Letters of John Wesley"

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. -- Robert F. Kennedy
