The kitchen is where over 10% of your total household water use
occurs. With these invaluable water saving tips and conservation
ideas, you can reduce your water use significantly in your kitchen
without sacrificing you and your family's comfort.
Whether you're boiling and preparing food, washing dishes or
getting a glass to drink, the kitchen in many ways seems to be
unavoidable. It's no wonder that a significant amount of indoor
water use occurs in most American kitchens. Since conserving water
means saving money (as well as a precious resource), every home can
benefit from these kitchen water saving tips and conservation
ideas.
Kitchen Sinks
If you have leaky kitchen faucets, repair them immediately. Most
times all that's needed is a replacement washer and a wrench. Even
the smallest leaks can have a very negative effect on your water
bills.
Install low flow water saving faucet aerators. They effortlessly
and significantly reduce faucet flow rates, and there incredibly
inexpensive. On average they cost a few bucks each and anyone can
install them in seconds.
Washing Dishes
Consider using your automatic dishwasher sparingly. Instead if
possible wash dishes by hand by filling up one side of the sink
with washing water and the other side of the sink with rinsing
water.
When using your automatic dishwasher, wash only full loads if
possible. And consider manually soaking your dishes (do not pre
rinse) before even placing them in the automatic dishwasher. This
allows you to use shorter cleaning cycles that use less water and
less energy.
Consider installing an electric point of use or tankless water
heater near your sink. With a small sized tankless water heater in
your kitchen you will never have to run the water and wait for it
to heat up.
Preparing Food
Avoid defrosting or thawing foods with hot or warm running water.
Instead defrost your frozen foods in the fresh food compartment of
your refrigerator.
Rinse your fruits and vegetables in a small sized designated pot,
instead of running water from the tap.
When boiling water for specific foods, attempt to match the pots
with the foods bring boiled. This is especially true when boiling
eggs and preparing spaghetti.
Also when boiling foods, use steamers and cover all pots with their
proper lids. This not only allows for less water to be used, it
also speeds up the cooking process which saves on either natural
gas or electricity as well.
Water use can be overlooked even by conservation minded homeowners.
