The National Trust Tackling Climate Change and a whole lot more

The impacts of climate change in the UK are increasingly affecting the historic buildings, gardens, countryside and coast in the care of the National Trust. Whilst recognising that climate change is an issue for urgent attention the National Trust is tackling it's greenhouse gas emmissions and using their experience to put pressure on Government.

An amazing 43 per cent of the land in England and Wales drains to the boundary of land owned by the National Trust. Maintaining and enhancing the water environment is a huge responsibility and the as the water environment is under threat there are many challenges to overcome such as water shortages, pollution and flooding.

To do this they are working with natural processes recognising that a new approach is needed to achieve a sustainable future and minimising ennvironmental damage caused by:

  • draining wetlands for agriculture and development, changing the flow of many courses
  • draining water of roofs.paths streets and land as quickly as possible thus increasing flood risks
  • taking huge quantities of water from the environment, much of which we then waste, damaging wildlife and habitats in the process and wasting energy required for water treatment.
  • allowing pollutants from household waste, sewage, industry, farming and roads to enter our waters, which we then have to treat to make them safe to drink.
  • introducing new, non-native species which have become invasive, threatening our native freshwater wildlife and disrupting natural systems.
  • Conserving nature, for the benefit of everyone, is at the heart of our work. We have a particularly important role to play in the conservation of freshwater habitats.

    National Trust sites include:

    * many lakes and tarns, ponds, streams and rivers
    * springs and headwaters of catchment areas
    * sections of slow-flowing rivers, down to their estuaries

They are responsible for many rare species in and around the freshwaters as well as promoting recreational access to our water wherever possible recognising that a healthy environment is esential to the enjoyment of their visitors.

There is still a whole lot more that needs to be done for our environment and your support by becoming a member will help them to achieve all their aims.

Please consider joining the National Trust today and preserving our heritage properties and land so that future generations can enjoy them as much as we can.

Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can. -- John Wesley, "Letters of John Wesley"

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. -- Robert F. Kennedy
