Pledging for Change

Low carbon technology is both clean and sustainable. And the more we invest in green energy, the cheaper it will become.

You can support green energy today, by switching to a green energy electricity supplier.

Definitely a great step that we all can take. I spent a while looking round for the best option and here's my conclusions:

Top of the list goes to having some form or renewable generation installed at your home/work. Often called micro-generation, this is the best solution because the power is generated where it's needed, so there's virtually no loss transporting the power over long distances.

Local small scale generation isn't always an option for people, ourselves included, for a variety of reasons such as moving property in a fairly short time frame. We'll be moving in the next couple of yrs, so the cost of installing local renewables is too high, but when we move it will be for the long term, so we'll go that way then.

So if you're not in a position to do it yourself, you're going to have to look to the big energy suppliers. While the electricity that comes down your plug will be exactly the same no matter which supplier you choose, there is a great difference in how it's generated. All suppliers now provide so-called "green energy" tariffs, but if you look at most of them they are either simply paying into green schemes such as planting trees, and/or using existing long established renewable sources such as hydro-elec. The trouble is, that while planting trees is great and we should all be panting more, the hydro-elec that's about is all from well established dams and reservoirs so isn't actually chanign the way electricity is being produced.

The best option to me, by far seems to be Ecotricity. There's on simple reason for this and that is they are investing more per customer into new renewable power generation than all the other suppliers combined! Those fine folks at Ecotricity are constantly investing in building new wind turbines, generating more clean green energy each year. They currently get over 50% of their enbergy from renewables and that's increasing every year.

Yes we use Ecotricity at home here. We have also gone all electric. Gas pipes due to be removed very soon.(we are renovating an old terrace)

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. -- Robert F.
