Pledging for Change

Hi Jan

Is inbound linking still part of SEO?..... and how does this fit in with profiles throughout the web on many different networks with the business website link.

( I am changing business direction this year)

I know I would never in a million years touch one of those link farms and I'm not sure of the value of exchange links either. There are free ads sites all over the web so would you think posting would add value to my inbound linking...if inbound linking still counts?

Cheers jF

Hi Juliette,

Yes, inbound linking is still very important to any SEO campaign.

Different links will carry a different weight with the search engines. Each link is viewed in terms of relevance, not just of the text used to link but also of the page the link comes from.

Although no links are strictly 'bad' links you are right to avoid link farms. Each link to your site should be viewed separately. Look at the text used to link to your site, where on your site the link goes to (doesn't have to be the home page) as well as where the link comes from.

The ideal links are those from pages that share a theme with your site. So if you have a link from a site which deals with 'sustainable resources' and you sell 'wood burning stoves' then ideally you would want your link to be on the page talking about 'Forestry Stewardship' as this would be the topic most relevant to you. And if the 'linked to' page talked about using wood from 'managed sources' then all the better.

So if you think about link value on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best) then this type of linking would be a 10. But lesser link values are still worth having - you just need more of them. Try to get your link from the most relevant page possible - so if you list in a directory make sure you list under the most applicable category. Links from online networking sites are useful but won't score highly as the 'theme' of the site isn't usually relevant.

Search for blogs and forums which are relevant to you too - take part in discussions where you can add value and include a link back to your site in your signature. Never overtly sell in a blog or a forum or you'll be shunned.

I hope this has shed some light on finding good links back to your site.

If you'd like any more help then please just ask!
