Charities using affiliate shops/programs need to think of consequences

It always amazes me when I see a charity fighting to save people in third world countries and promoting products that are harmful to the very people that they are trying to help.

What on earth is the point of saving one child in one part of the world and destroying the life of another in another part. I mean they quite happily promote stores and products made with child labour and chemical/pesticide riddled. Is it me of is that they are too consumed in their own mission to care about anything else?

Charities need to stop and think about what they are really doing with their fundraising. They need people who will take a more holistic approach to the crisis in front of them. Perhaps then we wont need another charity to sort out the mess that they are leaving behind.

Ps
I am a great believer and supporter of charitable organisations. I just don't think that some of them see the bigger picture!

Everything in our world is built upon the foundations of the past -- often making if very difficult for us to see what's right in front of us! When we're able to see a new way, a better way, we need to point out what seems like the obvious because it's truly invisible to those who are mired in old ways of thinking. Some people are visionaries and holistic thinkers, which is a gift that they were given to share with others -- who have different and equally important gifts to share.

We all need to help each other Wake Up to new ways of thinking about and being in the world. And we can't let the fact that an organization is devoted to a worthwhile cause stop us from speaking the truth. I can tell that you do believe in charitable organizations -- that's why you want them to truly WORK instead of simply shifting the problems around.

I totally agree with you Allana. I can never understand why so many business are trying their very best to be sustainable and making sure all their suppliers are sustainable business too. It seems some charities may be slipping through the net and are so focussed on raising money that they do not realise the harm they are doing by affiliating with and selling products from business that do not have the values that we would all like to see every business have.

Many do not see the bigger picture that's for sure. What's the point of helping one village whilst destroying the next because of slave labour and dangerous working conditions producing goods harmful to the environment and their health.
There are millions of sustainable business with affiliate programs in place now (just take a look at our "Share Program" on Pledging for Change) so there really are no more excuses.
And there are plenty companies able to help charities develop social and environmental responsiblity.
Definitely time to wake up and smell the coffee! We all want charities to work and help lots and lots of people and animals but you're right Pamela... we can no longer sit back and watch them shifting responsiblity for someone else to pick up the pieces.

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. -- Robert F.
